Project Name: Backyard Transformation for Mike and Lorraine Hollstien

Project Type: Residential
Project Length: 30 Days
Project Cost: $125,000

Overview:

Dogwood Landscaping, Pools, and Patios worked closely with Mike and Lorraine Hollstien to transform their previously unused backyard into a stunning, functional entertainment space. This comprehensive project included a large load-bearing retaining wall, a 1200 square foot paver patio, an outdoor kitchen, a pondless waterfall, LED low-voltage lighting, a paver walkway, natural stone steps, a boulder retaining wall, and drainage improvements. The result is a versatile outdoor area perfect for entertaining friends and family.

Project Highlights:

  • Engineered Retaining Wall: We installed a large, engineered retaining wall approximately 80 feet long, varying from 3 to 6 feet tall, to level the backyard and create space for a patio, outdoor kitchen, fire pit, water feature, and easy access to the basement door.
  • Boulder Retaining Wall: To add character and provide additional seating, we built a secondary retaining wall using large boulders weighing from 600 to 1000 pounds, which also helped break up the monotony of the concrete pavers and block.
  • Paver Patio and Walkway: The entertainment patio was created using Pavestone brand concrete pavers, and we designed a paver walkway that led from the new entertainment area to the driveway and side deck access. Different paver patterns defined unique areas for various activities.
  • Pondless Waterfall and Firepit: The homeowner added a 16-foot-long pondless waterfall that provides soothing sounds and an attractive view. We installed a natural gas firepit for cozy evenings with family and friends.
  • Natural Stone Steps: Large natural stone treads were used for a sturdy, aesthetically pleasing walkway from the patio to the driveway.
  • Drainage Improvements: A dry creek bed was created to direct water from the turf area, preventing erosion and ensuring proper drainage into the woods.

Client Feedback:

Mike and Lorraine Hollstien hired us through a referral from previous clients, Bill and Dawn Norman. They wanted to transform their unusable backyard into a space where they could relax and entertain friends and family. The final result exceeded their expectations, and they are thrilled with their new outdoor retreat.
